Town Meeting #2 - May 11, 2009 - Stamford's Role in the Metro and theMegaregion

The second Reinventing Stamford town meeting took place on Monday, May 11, 2009 from 6 to 9 pm at the Gen Re auditorium at UConn. The theme of this event was Stamford's role in the New York City metro and the Northeast megaregion. Both of these geographies contain local networks and are in turn contained within larger continental and global networks.

Understanding the dynamics of networks at various scales is critical to Stamford's economic success. One specific opportunity is to use higher speed and more frequent commuter rail to extend the geographic extent of small world networks described in the work of Lee Fleming. His award winning article, "Managing Creativity in Small Worlds," was provided to attendees as food for thought, along with "The Future of the Northeast Corridor" by the Business Alliance for Northeast Mobility.

To provoke the conversation, we brought together two of the nation's leading voices on metros, megaregions and the global network: Michael Gallis of Charlotte, North Carolina-based Gallis and Associates and Bob Yaro, President of the Regional Plan Association of New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. Gallis and Yaro are playing key roles in the development of national infrastructure policy. Gallis has done extensive work in Connecticut. Yaro is a Stamford resident. They were interviewed by Matt Nemerson, who has followed their work closely for the past 15 years, and who heads the Connecticut Technology Council.

As before, the primary objective was to get the right people talking about some of the key challenges facing Stamford. If we understand the emergent conditions in this turbulent time, we can take focused action to build the capabilities we need to succeed.
