2. Lee Fleming, "Managing Creativity in Small Worlds"The article won the Accenture Award for Best Business Article in 2006. Fleming used patent data to map the social networks among inventors, focusing on the evolution of what he calls small world networks in Boston and the Silicon Valley. Fleming was writing for the managers of technology firms, advising them on the care and feeding of "gatekeepers"--the mobile talent who build and sustain small world networks. But Fleming's insights also have profound implications for transportation policy, because higher speed and more frequent commuter rail systems have the potential to expand the geographic extent of small world networks. The Northeast megaregion, with its shoulder-to-shoulder metros, is in a unique position to exploit this opportunity.
